On February 7, 1999 Mattel was throwing a big party to celebrate the Barbie Doll turning 40 years old.

For four decades, Barbie had been a nurse, teacher, flight attendant, astronaut and NASCAR driver (just to name a few).  Now it was time to acknowledge all the other possibilities that existed for women in a variety of occupations.

Mattel’s PR firm Ketchum, retained DLB to identify unique and accomplished women in various fields to be honored at a gala event to be held in New York City.

Some of the prominent women we secured were Sylvia Earle (Marine biologist), Geraldine Laybourne (Founder of Oxygen Media), Muriel Siebert (First women on the NY Stock Exchange) and Rosie O’Donnell (Comedian).

These amazing women represented unlimited possibilities for all young women, just as Barbie does.
